Even before you cross the new cycle/pedestrian bridge over teh Doon you'll have spotted Greenan Castle precariously balancing on it's cliff edge. Shortly you'll be passing it on your way to Durure where another castle echoes the stance. This is an ideal picnic spot. Pause, too, at the compact little harbour.

If your're following route (b) or (c) watch out for the world famous Electric Brae before you drop to Croy Bay. Route (b) returns via Alloway with it's many Burn's association whilst the more demanding route (c) climbs steadily over the Carrick Hills with views which repay the effort.
